The Importance of Fluoride
Understanding the Types of Fluoride
Fluoride comes in two primary forms: systemic and topical.
Systemic Fluoride: This type is ingested, often through community water supplies, and strengthens tooth enamel during the development of teeth beneath the gums, making them more resistant to cavities.
Topical Fluoride: Applied directly to the teeth, this form protects already-erupted teeth from decay. It can be found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and professional fluoride treatments. Our in-office applications of topical fluoride foam and varnish are effective strategies for cavity prevention.
What to Expect During a Fluoride Treatment
A fluoride treatment at Rocky Mountain Kids Dentistry is a quick and straightforward procedure, usually lasting just a few minutes. After the treatment, we recommend that patients refrain from rinsing, eating, or drinking for at least 30 minutes to allow the teeth to fully absorb the fluoride. The frequency of fluoride treatments—whether every three, six, or twelve months—will be determined based on your child's oral health and our dentist’s recommendations. We may also suggest at-home fluoride products such as mouthwashes, gels, or antibacterial rinses.
