Urgent Dental Care for Children: What You Need to Know
In the event of a dental emergency involving your child, we urge you to reach out to us as soon as possible. Our team will be able to provide guidance on how to manage the situation and will arrange for your child to see our dentist at the earliest opportunity so they can receive necessary treatment. If your child has sustained any severe injury to the head or neck, we advise that they go to the emergency room prior to visiting us, even if there is also damage to their teeth. For more information regarding pediatric dental emergencies, feel free to call us or stop by our office.
The following situations are among the most frequent dental emergencies we handle at Rocky Mountain Kids Dentistry:

- Chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth
- Severe, persistent toothaches
- Any other damage to the soft tissues associated with the mouth
Please call us at any time, day or night, at 720.673.9371 for dental emergencies.
How to handle a knocked out tooth properly
- Knocked out permanent tooth: Confirm it is a permanent tooth. Find the tooth, being sure to pick it up by the crown (the white part) and avoid touching the root. Attempt to place the tooth back immediately into the socket. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently in milk, saline, or in the child’s saliva before replanting. DO NOT scrub the tooth or use soap. After the tooth is replanted, it is important that the child keep the tooth in place by biting down on gauze or a clean cloth. If replanting the tooth is not possible, transport the tooth in a cup containing milk, HBSS (Save-a-Tooth or similar product), saliva, or saline. Avoid using water if possible. If water is the only option, it is better than leaving the tooth to air-dry. The child must see a dentist IMMEDIATELY! Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.
- Knocked out baby tooth: Contact your pediatric dentist. Unlike with a permanent tooth, the baby tooth should not be reinserted due to possible damage to the developing permanent tooth. In most cases, no treatment is necessary.
Preventing Dental Emergencies
To reduce the likelihood of dental emergencies, regular check-ups and cleanings are vital. Our team will monitor your child’s oral health and catch potential issues early on. If your child is involved in contact sports, consider a custom mouthguard to help prevent injuries.
